Do I need to claim a Cold Weather Payment?
No, if you already get a qualifying benefit in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. It is £25 for each 7-day period of very cold weather, and it is paid automatically. Scotland does not use this. Scotland uses the Winter Heating Payment, which does not depend on the temperature.
- This is not the Winter Fuel Payment. That one is for people over State Pension age.
- If no qualifying benefit is in payment, there is nothing to trigger. Claiming Universal Credit does not by itself mean a cold week has been recorded at your weather station.
