Council Tax Reduction or Housing Benefit?
They are different claims. Council Tax Reduction, or Rate Rebate in Northern Ireland, helps with the bill. Housing Benefit helps with rent, and for most working-age renters the rent help is now inside Universal Credit.
- Universal Credit does not pay the council tax. That claim is still made to the council.
- A discretionary housing payment is a top-up. It is not an entitlement, and this check cannot calculate the shortfall.
