Does PIP affect Universal Credit?

PIP is not counted as income for Universal Credit. Getting PIP does not reduce a Universal Credit payment, and it does not by itself add a Universal Credit element for you. A person who cares for you for 35 hours a week may be able to get the carer element if you are on the daily living part.

  • Limited capability for work is a separate Universal Credit test. A PIP award is not that decision.
  • Tell Universal Credit that you have been awarded PIP. The amount of PIP is not a change of earnings, but the carer element can be.

What people mix up

PIP is about the extra cost of the condition. Universal Credit is about household income. They can be paid together.

Council Tax Reduction and a Motability agreement have their own rules. A PIP award does not automatically change the council tax bill.
