How do I start a UK credit file?
The government does not issue a credit score. Open a UK account in your name, have wages or a benefit paid in, and set up one Direct Debit. Then order the free statutory report from Experian, Equifax, TransUnion and Crediva.
- Register to vote only if your nationality and nation allow it. Being on the roll helps a lender find you. It is not available to every migrant.
- Checking your own statutory report does not lower a score. Do not apply for several cards while the file is empty.
