Who can get Housing Benefit?

New claims are mainly for people over State Pension age, and for some people in temporary or specified accommodation. If you are working age and you rent a normal home, help with rent is the Universal Credit housing element, not a new Housing Benefit claim.

  • The eligible rent is not calculated here. Local Housing Allowance or the social-rent rules still apply.
  • Savings of £16,000 or more usually stop Housing Benefit, unless Guarantee Pension Credit passports you through.
